Summers almost here and making me think about stripes...cabanas and awnings and beach umbrellas, but other things come to mind as well...

These cabanas are on a beach in Dinard, France.
A painting of the same beach from about 1907 with yellow striped cabanas, by Clarence Alphonse Gagnon (1881-1942), a Canadian artist.
This is a picture from about 1926, showing Gerald and Sara Murphy with friends on La Garoupe Beach, Antibes, and an iconic beach cabana.
From 1905, a photo of Gustav Klimpt with Emilie Floge, the proprieter of a Viennese fashion salon. What a wonderful robe she has on!
This purple and white striped silk robe was worn by the model in a number of Matisse paintings. You can see an example below,in the 1937 painting, "Small Odalisque in a Purple Robe".
We rented a house in Tricase Porto, Puglia, Italy, a few years ago. These striped curtains are on a doorway from the Breakfast Room to the front patio.

This smiling girl is modeling a red and white striped shirt made by Marimekko. The Jokapoika shirt was designed in 1956 by Vuokko Nurmesniemi and has been in production ever since.
One of my favorite stripes, "Gent's Stripe", in coral from John Robishaw, available to the trade at Thomas Lavin in Los Angeles.
From the Elle Decor book, a red and white striped shower curtain from Ralph Lauren. I like the way the stripe is used in a perpendicular direction as a banding at the top.
Mara Lane, photographed by Slim Aarons at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, 1954.
This striped cover of Domus is from April 1930. It's a beautiful composition. I can imagine it as the design for a storefront. Domus was founded by Gio Ponti in 1928.
A few years ago I received this David Hockney drawing on a gallery invitation from Louver Gallery in Venice, Ca. Ever since I've wanted to find a place for a red and white wide striped sofa!

Beautiful, charming post! It's like summer in a bottle.
ReplyDeleteNow I need to go watch "Breathless" and chew some fruity gum.
Love this blog.
ah ms laura, it was delightful to run into you and to immerse myself in the not so secret life of stripes...!
ReplyDeleteutterly gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a FANTASTIC post!!! I absolutely love stripes in interiors, fashion, anywhere so this post just made me totally happy!
ReplyDeleteVerticals, horizontals diagonals.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the juxtapositional thing about stripes and Laura, as always I love your collection of images that you have put together.
Wish I knew how to add images in my comment[oh well, just another technical thing to get on top of] but Karl Benjamin was ' dancing the line ' in the late fifties and again in the eighties and nineties in an interesting way.
Love the Slim Aarons shot- that actually inspired my swimming pool series [3 horizontal rectangles [with the subtle reflections and cracks and tiny odd rust spots]and then resined to give the feeling of viewing through water. My minimal take on those great old pools. Much love Fiona Pattinson
Fantastic post! If I were in L.A., rather than La-the state, you would be my designer based on this post alone! Gerald and Sara are my current obsession. Other obsessions include Jean Seberg, Hockney, Slim Aarons, Domus, Matisse, Jenna Lyons and black and white stripes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know... I'm glad you enjoy all those inspirational sources too!
